Uncle Bill BBQ
Year
2018
When me and my girlfriend bought our first house the previous owner(s) left a big old metal barrel with a rounded top and bottom. They asked me if it was okay if they left it there. I was actually very happy with that old scrappy barrel and saw it as a bonus not knowing what it was going to be good for. After a year or so we decided to buy a tiny indoor wood stove. To connect the stove to the flue in the wall I had to buy these big black diameter steel tubes. They were very expensive so I decided to look for them on an online thrift shop.
Found a bunch with the exact diameter just a village away. After the job was done I had some leftovers. Storing the leftovers right beside the old barrel together with the wish in the back of my head of wanting a cool-looking BBQ in the garden. The design of this chunky belly and lumpy feet BBQ was instantly born. Absolutely loved the idea and after getting over some details in bed that night I started welding the very next day. Being not the professional welder that I am, seeing intense thick white smoke coming off the weld was not something that stopped me immediately. The idea that the smoke was probably caused by the galvanized layer and would be very toxic I held some distance between the working area and my head. It was not enough. Sometimes the smell got to me and my head became blue for holding my breath for so long. I started researching. Apparently, the galvanized smoke was not just toxic but f*ing deadly. The idea of having a bbq that becomes very hot with a galvanized layer was not a pleasant one after reading all kinds of horror stories so I terminated the project to do it right another day.
